The End of White Guilt?

My mom sent me this editorial by some prick named Tom Adkins.  Because most of the posts like this that I get from my parents tends to be bogus, I checked Snopes, and there’s nothing there.  So I googled the guy and found that he runs a site called Common Conservative.  Because the email came without context, I was surprised to discover that it was published in the Philly Inquirer.  Surprised because it’s so ignorant, so hostile, and, well, just so unworthy of publication.

Here are a few nuggets:

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not thrilled with America’s flirtation with neosocialism. But there’s a massive silver lining in the magical clouds that lofted Barack Obama to the presidency. For today, without a shred of intellectually legitimate opposition, I can loudly proclaim to America:

The Era of White Guilt is over.

So today, I’m feeling a little “uppity,” if you will. From this day forward, my tolerance level for having my skin color hustled is exactly ZERO. No more Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s “God Damn America,” Al Sharpton’s Church of Perpetual Victimization, or Jesse Jackson’s rainbow racism. Cornel West? You’re a fraud. All those “black studies” programs must now teach kids to thank Whitey. And I want that on the final.

Congressional Black Caucus? Irrelevant. U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters (D., Calif.)? Shut up. ACORN? Outlawed. Black Panthers? Go home and pet your kitty. Black separatists? Find another nation that offers better dreams.

So … Wham!!!

That’s the sound of my foot kicking the door shut on the era of white guilt. The rites have been muttered, the carcass lowered, dirt shoveled, and tombstone erected. Dead and buried.

I’m working on my rebuttal, but I could write on this for days.  From my experience, most white people don’t experience true guilt, and most black people don’t want them to.  Rather, an enlightened perspective, and ones that my students and black friends would appreciate, is what this guy lacks–an awareness of the still-pervasiveness of racism, and an appreciation for the white privilege he enjoys.

And then, bleeding heart liberal that I am, I also find myself pitying this guy.  Because he most likely doesn’t know any black people, he has this paranoid image in his mind of perpetual hostility and conspiracy to usurp his status in the country.  The Angry White Man seems so ’80s, doesn’t it?  And I sense more than a hint of self-loathing in him too–as though finally shedding this white guilt is going to make everything better for him.  Well, I don’t see that happening, as I don’t believe he’s ever felt guilt about anything, and he’ll still have an angry, delusional, pathetic existence.

Ok, I don’t have that much pity.

Adkins’ archives include this one from 2005: “Home values are even booming in blue collar areas and hopping in the ‘hood, proving the Bush economic plan is creating wealth in neighborhoods that old economic models didn’t help. If you own a home almost anywhere, you should send George Bush a thank-you letter” from this article:
Looks like he has some experience being an idiot.

Wow, thanks, JLE. Not exactly prescient.

Do New Orleans a HUGE favor and get the fuck out of our city. Just get on your bicycle and pedal the fuck away. Go back to whatever lame ass city and state you came from and you can spout off all your stupid opinions until you cream on yourself. You are obviously not from this city because only a fag poser would be wearing that stupid hat in your picture. You’re so cool, so real, so New Orleans. Get the FUCK out of this city, and take your Obama-loving, the black man is my brother as he sticks a gun in my face, I think I’m cool because I am going to be a part of the post-katrina rebuilding of New Orleans, I am a real New Orleanian because I go listen to live music on the weekends and ride my bike while drinking an Abita, never miss a Galactic concert lame ass bullshit with you.

  4. HammHawk says:

Gosh, Joe, I never knew how much you cared….

  5. Sock says:

    Hey Joe,
Your dream of chasing citizens like HammHawk from the city only indicates that you are a very confused guy. Now really, is it HawwHawk’s hat or his politics that really bites your ass? Even if Hammhawk is not a native, he clearly brings a passion for its culture and commitment to its recovery from which you might learn. Learn, Joe, learn, give yourself a chance, there’s still hope for you. Instead of living out your life as an angry troll who hurls insults wildly, you could find yourself riding your new bike to Tip’s and standing next to Hawwhawk at the next Galactic show!
